It’s a transformative read that leaves you seeing the world — and yourself — through a much wider lens. The last we heard from DeWitt was her 2022 novella The English Understand the Wool – a book that was specifically designed to be read in one sitting. And so we move on the story and are taken like deep inside her mind as she moves into a memory care facility and ugh, that part is so brilliant and wise and again heartbreaking specificity of details.

They conveyed such sadness and depression that it was impossible for me to stop without finishing. Then I had this deviant realization about myself recently that I love this genre and therefore would like y’all to recommend me some masterpieces from it. There are two books of hers that I think would be good for Anne to start with if she hasn’t read her before. One is called Someone, which is a very short novel that tells the story of Marie, an Irish-American woman living in Brooklyn after World War I. The first is The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. It has a little bit of a magical aspect to it, a long scope and a climate change theme that I really enjoyed.

Fans of Curry will also be psyched to know he’s narrating the audiobook version too. A single mother named April leaves her daughter, in what was supposed to be a temporary stint in self-discovery. Instead, April is gone for a long time and the novel takes the form of a letter April writes to her daughter explaining what happened.

Morgenstern’s prose is lush and atmospheric, making this book as much about mood as it is about plot. It’s a must-read for fans of lyrical writing, subtle romance, and rich worldbuilding. This mind-expanding history of humankind is equal parts epic and enlightening. Harari takes you on a sweeping journey from prehistoric tribes to modern civilizations, connecting the dots between biology, economics, politics, and technology. It’s the kind of book that reorients your understanding of human behavior and progress.

There’s a lot of intergenerational family drama and charm, which I know it’s something you like. And it explores the experience of African-American soldiers during World War I and World War II and black and white relations in the South. That’s a space where you and I have it in common. And that’s my obscure shelf, on my bookshelf is like trade policy and economic development, whereas yours is, you know, architecture and city design.

There’s a lot coming out on the publishing horizon but here are a few that might be worth some extra consideration as you’re putting together your library hold list. Otherwise, just keep reading, and stop and explore when you find something that feels right. To choose your next book, consider the reading level (young adult vs. adult) and the type of book (fiction vs. nonfiction).
